The advantages of TIG welding
Tungsten Inert Gas welding (TIG) – or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) – is the process of metal fusion by heating a non-liquefying electrode and your chosen material through an electric arc in order to create a specific workpiece. It is normally used in cases that require a high-quality application, which is also durable and long-lasting.
At Special Metals, we provide a premier welding service for the synthesis of both free issue materials and refractory materials. We use our expert “Miller Syncrowave” welding equipment, which is the best TIG welding tool on the market. It offers a variety of advantages, including:
Flawless craftsmanship
If you require a visually appealing workpiece then TIG welding is the best option for you. It enables detailed precision due to its ability to control the temperature of the weld puddle, which reduces the amount of spatter produced and avoids contamination.
This is perfect if you require a cosmetic workpiece, such as automobile parts or art displays that must be produced in pristine condition.
Flexible application
One of the main benefits of TIG welding is its ability to fuse a wide range of materials for a variety of applications such as vehicles, industrial equipment, furnishings and more.
Our TIG welding equipment also allows fixtures to be constructed in a variety of positions including flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead, as well as in various thickness dimensions. This variation of size and shape makes it ideal for use in both open and restricted spaces.
Refractory metal welding
At Special Metals, we are one of the few companies in the UK that are able to weld the extremely complex refractory material – tantalum.
Tantalum cannot be welded in a typical atmosphere, which is why we have two welding chambers specially designed to weld the following refractory metals: tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, zirconium, and titanium.
The chambers vary in size – our larger chamber is 1000mm in diameter and 2.2 metres long, and our slightly smaller welding chamber is a metre long and has a diameter of 750mm. Both vacuum chambers are designed to prevent the process of oxidisation, as refractory metals are vulnerable to oxygen attacks – especially tantalum. Which is why our chambers hold a high vacuum of 10-3MB combined with argon, which ensures a low oxygen level of >5ppm in order to protect the welded metals.
Get in touch with Special Metals
Our expert team at Special Metals have over 75 years’ experience in the special metals industry collectively, which is why we are one of the leading companies in the UK for all your metal part needs.
Our welding service is mainly used by clients who require specific parts for their workpieces, however, we also offer a weld-only service for any material of your choice.
We provide a same day welding delivery service, to ensure that your project is completed within your specified deadline.
