Metal thefts have been replaced…
It has emerged that although its a good news that metal thefts have dropped, thieves are still stealing but now in the form of cigarettes!
It has become a ‘crime of choice’ and they are now targeting places closer to home such as supermarkets and local mini stores.
It was the intense increase of metal thefts that have now significantly reduced, due to that scrap merchants having been forced to stop paying in cash.
Detective Chief Inspector Mick Luke, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We believe the increase in burglary at these stores is due to thieves targeting cigarettes because of their value and re-saleability.
“We are working hard to catch the criminals involved in these offences and have recently made some good arrests.”
