Police issue warnings to motorists over metal thefts
The Kent Police are sending out warnings for motorists due to metal thieves allegedly stealing catalytic converters.
PC Ben Clatworthy, from the Kent Police, said: “We would always encourage people to contact us if they see any suspicious behavior around vehicles, or see a theft in progress.
“Due to the valuable platinum they contain, catalytic converters are a popular target for thieves, but we will be keeping up the pressure on them and regularly visit scrapyards to ensure they don’t inadvertently handle stolen goods.”
To stop you being a victim of catalytic converter theft, the police have recommended:
- Keep vehicles in a garage whenever possible, or park in busy, well-lit areas.
- Look out for people working under cars who are acting suspiciously.
- Fit a catalytic converter clamp or security cage to protect the converter.
- Security mark and register the metal shell of the converter so if it is stolen and recovered, it will be easier to trace it back to the vehicle.
