Tantalum Plates

At Special Metals UK, we are proud to be able to produce tantalum plates to suit any specifications you may have, for use in a massive range of applications throughout metallurgy, industry and engineering.

Tantalum is a hard, dark-coloured metal which occurs rarely in the Earth’s crust, always in the form of ores which contain its sister element, niobium. The process of purifying and extracting the two metals, and then separating them from one another, is a complex one – but it is worth going to the effort. Once purified, tantalum plates have a huge range of applications across a swathe of industries.

Pure tantalum has an incredible resistance to corrosion, and is even able to resist the attacks of acids which can dissolve gold and platinum. This makes it ideal for the chemical manufacturing industry and other applications where a component will be exposed to caustic or corrosive materials, like marine engineering and the petrochemical industry. As well as being resistant to corrosion, pure tantalum is completely bioinert, making it the perfect choice for orthopaedic implants and surgical equipment – which are usually machined from pure tantalum plates.

Tantalum also has an extraordinarily high melting point, which lends itself well to furnace components and other high-temperature applications. However, this attribute is largely harnessed in the creation of tantalum-containing superalloys, which are used in some of the most rigorous applications of any engineering – jet turbines, aerospace engineering and rocketry, nuclear engineering and missile production, among other high-intensity, high-tech applications. Tantalum plates are commonly used as a precursor to these alloys, to provide the pure, high-quality tantalum needed.
