Tungsten Billets

Tungsten, discovered in 1781 and occasionally still known by its old name, Wolfram, is a relatively rare metal found exclusively as a number of ores or compounds in the Earth’s crust. Once purified, it is revealed to be a silvery-grey, lustrous metal with high density and an extremely high melting point – the highest melting point of any element known to science.

In addition to this incredible melting point, tungsten has good electrical conductivity, good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, as well as exceptional hardness, which can exceed that of steel. When alloyed with other metals, tungsten billets provide some of these properties to the alloy, boosting the melting point, thermal resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness and many other desirable characteristics.

Tungsten billets form an excellent blank for the production of a huge range of tungsten components, as they are easy to store and transport, and designed to be worked into a final product, such as rocket nozzles, furnace components, high-temperature tools or tungsten wire, which the billets can be drawn into.

As well as use in their pure element form, tungsten billets can be easily incorporated into alloys, as they are a suitable shape and size to be cut up into precise amounts, perfect for blending with other metals. Tungsten billets can be mixed with steel, copper and other metals to create a variety of high-performance alloys, and is even a key component in the superalloys used in jet engines, turbines, space programmes and other super-high intensity roles.
