Tungsten, also sometimes known as Wolfram, is a heavy, dense metal with a silvery-grey colour and a shiny, lustrous appearance. A relatively rare metal, tungsten occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust only as ores and compounds with other elements, and must be mined and purified into its elemental form before its unique properties become obvious – properties like having the highest melting point of any known element.
Tungsten is commonly used in a variety of applications for its incredible melting point and low coefficient of expansion at high temperatures, as well as for its good thermal and electrical conductivity. When alloyed with other metals, it can contribute to very hard, tough alloys, boost the thermal resistance of the alloy, raise its melting point, increase its resistance to corrosion, or even help to form superalloys like those used in jet turbines and aerospace engineering.
Tungsten sheets are an excellent starting point for much of this work, as they can be extremely easily stored and transported, and are a good blank to begin from when forming, cutting or machining a variety of tungsten items. Relatively easy to cut and form, tungsten sheets can also be cut into precise pieces for use in alloys and super-alloys, making it much easier to reliably mix and blend these valuable and useful alloys.
