What is titanium used for?
Ask anyone to make a list of the first 5 metals that come to mind, and it’s likely titanium will feature. Little surprise, given that it’s a metal with a wide variety of uses and one that boasts many beneficial properties.
But just what are those uses and where does titanium feature in everyday life? Here the experts at Special Metals, take a closer look…
In the air and at sea
Titanium is very strong and can survive at the highest temperatures without melting, making it a great choice for the aerospace industry, where powerful machines are in use for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, it is used ahead of niobium for example, which is used in jewellery, quite different to use when powerful machines are around!
The strength of titanium also makes it an asset at sea. Seawater is highly corrosive and can weaken materials over time, but this is where titanium surpasses other metals by being highly resistant to corrosion. Uses of titanium in the sea include widespread use on underwater navy vessels, as well as fire suppression systems that keep conditions in the sea safe for wildlife and humans alike.
Medical uses
Not only is titanium beneficial at sea, but it is also regularly put to good use in hospitals. Again, due to its resistance to corrosion and excellent strength, it’s relied upon as part of lifechanging medical procedures and surgery.
For example, its non-toxic properties make it perfect for joint replacements, and pacemakers. Medical instruments are also made from the metal to offer safe and effective surgical equipment.
Although tungsten has similar properties to titanium in many aspects, it’s the latter that is used widely in medical practice. The most obvious reason for this is the cost, as titanium is cheaper to produce than its tungsten counterpart.
How titanium is used in sports
To gain the extra edge in a sporting competition, it can often be the equipment you use that makes the difference and gets you over the line first. This is why titanium is regarded as a very important material in a variety of sports. Thanks to its winning combination of being light weight yet offering high levels of durability and strength, it provides the perfect combination of ease, comfort and power.
This is why you can see titanium prevalent in many sports, including tennis, skiing, baseball, pool and golf amongst others. The aforementioned uses for titanium at sea also make it popular with fishing equipment.
