Winter Olympians to receive space rock!
10 athletes at the winter Olympic Games in Sochi will have an opportunity to take home more than just a gold, silver or bronze medals!
Chelyabinsk was hit with a meoteorite last February 15th, and to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of the meteor strike by awarding medals.
The medals will include a piece of the space rock and only the athletes who win gold medals on that day will receive one.
The medals have been made with gold and silver, and inset with a piece of the meteorite.
In total, 50 medals have been made. Ten will be awarded to athletes, while some 40 others will be sold to private collectors.
The following events will be up for the grabs of these medals:
- men’s 1,500 meter speed skating,
- women’s 1,000 meters
- men’s 1,500 short track
- women’s cross-country skiing rela
- men’s K-125 ski jump
- women’s super-giant slalom
- men’s skeleton.
